Non-Fiction Workshop II

Finally, I got to take a class with Alisa Slaughter, who has to have one of the most intimidating names as a professor ever. And even has a slightly intimidating reputation. Instead what I found was a profoundly insightful professor, who… while I may disagree with some of her views of campus life, is deeply engaging, particularly to those students who engage with her.

As I learned from Non-Fiction II, I was supposed to have covered memoir righting, and that sort of softer non-fiction work, instead of that wacky Non-Fiction I class with the adjunct that I got, dealing with writing exercises. In this seminar we focused on three types of writing: Review writing, Travel writing, and Social Documentary. So for the class I wrote three essays, and then for the final portfolio, I turned in three revised copies. There’s no title page, no table of contents, no introduction or writer’s reflection, as per Slaughter’s request.

Enjoy!
